World Cup

One of the world's biggest (if not the biggest) sporting events has started... the World Cup. I am simply going to refer to it as that because there is no way that Qatar should ever have been awarded the games. There is so much evidence of both the corrupt nature of the selection process and of FIFA itself.

An incredible amount of money is being spent on these games. Qatar is saying these games are carbon neutral, but everyone pretty well agrees that that is not true.

FIFA’s decision to select Qatar as the host nation led to allegations of corruption back in 2010 and criticism and controversy have hardly ceased since.

Qatar’s human rights record and its maltreatment of migrant workers and the LGBT community as well as women's rights have many accusing the state of sportswashing; attempting to tidy their reputation via the World Cup.

I am not paying extra to watch the World Cup so I get to watch TSN/CTV for some games & FOX for others. I will FOX as much as possible, their commentary is just too pro-USA for my tastes.

World Soccer Talk has an interesting comparison between the BBC's approach vs FOX's.  https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/bbc-qatar-world-cup-opening-in-stark-contrast-to-fox-20221120-WST-409177.html

Here's an older video (8 years ago!) from John Oliver. John Oliver's language is not always the best, but he makes some excellent points.

This is from last night
