mother's day music satire

This is wonderful
What would Mother’s Day be without some gentle musical satire?
Glad you asked.
Here’s a (mercifully brief) live performance recording of a “non-autobiographical cautionary tale” I wrote* a couple of years ago to mark the occasion (click the title to listen):A Mother’s Day Song

some good gospel blues
Could have been raised on the block,
and wandered near and far.
No matter where you come from,
No matter who you are.
Don't need no ID, don't need no membership card.
Don't you know you're always welcome in my Father's house.
**********
Could be a child of the streets, could be a rich man's son.
No matter what you're doing, no matter what you've done.
When you've got no place to hide, and no place left to run.
Don't you know, there's always shelter in my Father's house.
***********
When you're lonely and discouraged, and misery won't end.
When you need that helping hand, and no one wants to lend.
And when you're down on your knees, and praying for a friend.
Don't you know, you'll surely find one, in my Father's house.
***********
When you're mistreated in this world, like a stranger in a strange land.
And when the chains around your heart, are just to much to stand.
When heaven's just a word, and hell is close at hand.
Come lay your burden down child, in my Father's house.

night watch posts a tribute to Jeff Healey
She includes this YouTube clip of Healy playing While My Guitar Gentle Weeps.
One of the amazing things about Healy was his remarkable range in music. Not only did he play classic rock, but was a great jazz musician as well.
He will be missed.
...who jokingly said he was related to most of London, Ontario area folks....I was one of many. This man's story weaves through some of the faithful saints that have been so very dear to my spiritual journey. It was so awesome to see how God spun the threads of this man's life into my own. I did not know him hardly at all but by name. Others knew him much, much more. He was known to have a spirituality about him. I know his eyes have been opened by the One and Holy God. May his family find comfort at this time of great sadness.

Larry Norman
Sunday, March 02, 2008

Stephen Shields provides this faith maps - metamap to Larry Norman links.
Dan Sheffield posts this reflection on the Larry Norman funeral:
"a quick description from someone who was there:What a gathering! Perhaps 500 (?) of us poured into a church in Salem this morning to pay our respects to Larry. As we entered we were handed 'circus programs' (instead of a boring pamphlet) that read: Larry Norman Presents: A Going Away Party.
It was a gathering of friends, family and fans alike. As people caught up with one another organ music filled the air. Then, all of a sudden: SCREEEEEEETCH! It was the sound of a record player needle ripping across vinyl.'I ain't knocking the hymns,What followed was a wonderful montage of music, photographs, and videos of Larry throughout his life. Friends and family spoke and there were a few performances. After it was all over we ate hot dogs, popcorn and Cracker Jacks! A party. Just like Larry wanted."
Just give me a song that has a beat.
I ain't knocking the hymns,
Just give me a song that moves my feet.
I don't like none of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet!'

smoke on the water
Monday, January 28, 2008
It's funny how a phrase will pop out of the sub conscious and stick with you. "Smoke on the water" did that to me today. I have no idea why the phrase popped into my mind today.
It's the title of the classic Deep Purple tune. One of those standard set of songs learned early on for most rock guitar players. It has a great riff. I've heard versions on organ, ukulele, and synthesizer... it seems everybody plays "Smoke On The Water". If you listen to just one version... go to the G3 version near the bottom. It would go great with a reading of Job 41:18f
Here's the original Deep Purple
Apologetix parody
a bit unusual...
and this killer multi-guitar solo from "G3".
bob dylan playing, not "smoke on the water" but "man in the long black coat" which has the line "smoke on the water"

Skip is back
Friday, September 14, 2007
Some of us grew up with the music of Lighthouse - the 13 piece rock 'n' roll band formed in 1968 by jazz composer Paul Hoffert and rock drummer Skip Prokop... Lighthouse produced five successive gold or platinum albums that garnered the band numerous Juno awards, including Best Rock Group (1970, 71, 72) and Record of the Year (One Fine Morning).
Well, Skip is back with his son, Jamie, and a new band Mercy Street.
Their web site and myspace page both offer the free downloads.
It looks like their first gig is change conference at Queensway Cathedral (Toronto) in October.

Well, Skip is back with his son, Jamie, and a new band Mercy Street.
Their blend of Acoustic/Electric rock will sooth the hardest of hearts and pound on the softest with their groove-based material. They have just completed there first recordings in studio and have released to the public an EP that they have requested be copied, shared, and given away at no charge...

Jason Upton
Saturday, September 08, 2007
I've been listening to Jason Upton recently, especially his
album Great River Road.
Central to Jason's testimony are his Native American roots, which has prophetic implications of healing, namely to specific issues pertaining to American history and the current state of the church. He was originally told that his birth father was a Dakota, which is one of the tribes of the Sioux nation. He has more recently come to know that his birth father is Cherokee.
I have some friends who have 1st Nation's blood... some full status, some Metis, some proud of their heritage, some ignore and don't want anyone to know, some who know the pain of aboriginal schools.
This album, especially the first part, reflects those 1st Nations roots.
If you've never listened to Jason, let me encourage you to check him out. He is somewhat critical of highly structured church services and varying degrees of professionalism in the church. He brings a prophetic voice (some say in the vein of Keith Green) to the church and to worship

it was 40 years ago today
Friday, June 01, 2007

40 years ago today - 1 June 1967 - what many call the best rock and roll album of all time was released.
Why the greatest? Short answer: It was the most innovative. While not the Beatles' most original collection of songs, it was a unified package. The album had an overarching theme and distinct identity, musically and lyrically — with smooth segues between songs that reminded us that the whole was more important than the sum of its parts — a first in pop music. Some would say it created a new business model: the preeminence of the 33 1/3 RPM album.
We no longer have that model, the rise of iTunes has resulted in single songs being sold rather than a larger package.
I remember hanging out at friends places in Montreal & listening to the album over & over & over again.

some just plain fun music
Tuesday, April 17, 2007
Have some fun today... take a listen to a couple of songs... just for fun
1/ The Zimmers
The Zimmers are a choir of senior citizens. Check them out singing "My Generation" via boing boing. Formed in early 2007, The Zimmers are not only the oldest gigging band in the world (with an average age of 78), they are also the most celebrated, having recorded their debut album at the famous Abbey Road Studios
Here's their myspace page: The Zimmers
2/ What if the Beatles were Irish?
Roy Zimmerman answers the age old question: "What if the Beatles were Irish?" by playing a very funny medley of jig versions of famous Beatles songs via boing boing

If Everyone Cared
Monday, April 02, 2007
Fellow blogger Bill Kinnon links to Nickleback's "If Everyone Cared". Like Bill I have not been a big fan of Nickleback but this is worth listening to & watching.
NICKLEBACK "If Everyone Cared"
From underneath the trees, we watch the sky
Confusing stars for satellites
I never dreamed that you'd be mine
But here we are, we're here tonight
Singing Amen, I'm alive
Singing Amen, I'm alive
[CHORUS]
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
We'd see the day when nobody died
And I'm singing
Amen I, I'm alive
Amen I, I'm alive
And in the air the fireflies
Our only light in paradise
We'll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along
Singing Amen I'm alive
Singing Amen I'm alive
[CHORUS (X2)]
And as we lie beneath the stars
We realize how small we are
If they could love like you and me
Imagine what the world could be
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
We'd see the day when nobody died
We'd see the day, we'd see the day
When nobody died
We'd see the day, we'd see the day
When nobody died
We'd see the day when nobody died

boing boing links to this "human beatbox" contestant on a French TV talent show with truly insane skills. For a couple of minutes of amazing vocal skills, check out the video link... maybe we can combine this with the anti-emerging church guy.
He even manages to work in a sample of Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express"! The clip begins at level "awesome," and steadily proceeds into "utterly unreal." Video Link (thanks Ravi!).
