the National Gallery of Art - Afghanistan
The website for the National Gallery of Art exhibition - Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul - primarily consists of an interactive timeline of artifacts from Afghanistan dating from the Bronze Age, 2200 - 1900 B.C. through the 2nd century A.D. For example, view gold bowls from Tepe Fullol, a site discovered in 1966, providing the first evidence of Bronze Age Culture in northern Afghanistan; or a gilded silver ceremonial plate from the former Greek city of Aï Khanum, founded by a follower of Alexander the Great in 300 B.C. The purpose of the exhibition is not only to showcase, but also to preserve, the rich but endangered history and culture of Afghanistan. In ancient times a crossroads of the Silk Road, Afghanistan in the 20th and 21st centuries has been ravaged by wars and conflict. Visitors should also check out the link "History and Maps", which leads to more information from the National Geographic Society, a co-organizer of the exhibition.
Random mug turns out to be ancient artifact
In 1945, John Webber's grandfather, a scrap metal dealer, gave his son a random mug to play with that he had picked up along the way. John always thought it was brass and kept it with a bunch ofGreatest? Moments in the Price is Rightother random stuff in a shoebox under his bed. Then when John, now 70, was moving out of his home, he decided to have the mug appraised. Turns out, the mug is gold and was made in the third or fourth century BC. It's expected to sell at auction for nearly a million bucks. Antiques Roadshow, eat your heart out! From AFP: Webber... told The Guardian newspaper that his grandfather had a "good eye" for antiques and picked up "all sorts" as he plied his trade in the town of Taunton in south-west England.
"Heaven knows where he got this, he never said," he added, revealing that as a child, he used the cup for target practice with his air gun.via boing boing

bible manuscripts discovered
For a long time, Albania has closed its doors to western scholars. Last summer, a four-person team from the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts went to Tirana to photograph 13 manuscripts in the National Archive. They were unprepared for what would happen on their first day on the job. They saw an old typewritten, in-house catalog of manuscripts, and noticed that there were forty-seven (47) NT MSS! The Dallas Morning News reported on this to some degree, featuring a full-page article on the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts.via reclaiming the mind
Christianity Today is planning an article on the discovery... I'll post the link when the article is posted.
title sequences
beyond magazine writes:
I love title sequences. Sometimes more than the movies themselves.
Someone has re-imagined the Star Wars opening in the style of Saul Bass. And of course, if you check that one out you have to take a look at Bass' Anatomy of a Murder and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, a family favorite that we used to stay up to watch every New Year's Eve. Yes, I lived in the age before VHS. And fire. And the wheel.

Like the old Rhinos, the party has no clear political ideology except for two deep beliefs: something’s seriously wrong with the state of modern politics, and Canadian public discourse could use a lot more fun.
"We are a Marxist-Lennonist party - based on the philosophy of Groucho Marx and John Lennon,” said party president Francois Gourd.
Beneath the thick veneer of gags, the party raises a serious point: people are so disenchanted with politics that almost 40 per cent of Canadians no longer bother voting in federal elections. - Style

And this is a 3 dimensional projection (it's shadow) being rotated. It's hard to get your head around becase we not only have the fact that we're trying to imagine the 3 dimensional shadow of a four dimensional object, but we also have the fact that we are attempting to portray that 3 dimensional shadow on your two dimensional computer screen. The 2nd item for today is the tin of book darts. They are perfect for use as non-slipping bookmarks that can even be positioned to point to a specific line. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software.
