book review: For Theirs Is The Kingdom

title: For Theirs is the Kingdom
author: Christopher Carlisle
date: 2021
publisher: Resource Publications

For Theirs is the Kingdom started off slowly. I didn't think I was going to like it. But Christopher's descriptions of one of my favourite cities (Montreal), as well visits to the south of France and Marocco, his way of seeing people and through conversation drawing out what is really important, he drew me in.

His, at times, subtle humour; his informal analysis of (catholic) church hierarchy; his exploration of life on the street - all make for a story that is more than a story.

One of the things that struck me was the interplay between Jesus' way and the way of church as business. The latter was filled with stuff but was empty. The former is filled with life, and pain, and beauty.

Well worth the read.
