roll away the stone

Mumford & Sons

The first time I heard this song by "Mumford and Sons" the following lines jumped out:
It seems that all my bridges have been burned,
But you say that’s exactly how this grace thing works
It’s not the long walk home that will change this heart,
But the welcome I receive with the restart
These guys get it.
Christianity is not about going on a spiritual journey toward... enlightenment, salvation, holiness, or whatever you want to call it.
It's about where the journey begins:
  • In the parable about the Father and the Prodigal Son, the son doesn't even get a chance to explain; his father dad puts his arms around him and throws a party for him, before he can do anything to set things right. He did nothing to earn grace.
  • Jesus welcomed his disciples into belonging, before they even began to make sense of who he was and what he going to do.
  • It's not what you and I do that puts us right with God; but what Jesus has done. We are welcomed in by grace, period, end of sentence. From there we get to participate with God in his desire to bring his Kingdom and his will on earth as it is in heaven.
The rest of the lyrics are below... enjoy the song.
Roll away your stone I will roll away mine
Together we can see what we will find
Don't leave me alone at this time
For I am afraid of what I will discover inside

You told me that I wouldn't find a home
Beneath the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal
And all the while my character it steals

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think
Yet it dominates the things I see

It seems that all my bridges have been burned
But you say 'That's exactly how this grace thing works’
It's not the long walk home that will change this heart
But the welcome I receive with every start

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think
And yet it dominates the things I see (x2)

Stars hide your fires
For these here are my desires
And I won't give them up to you this time around
And so I will be found
With my stake stuck in the ground
Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul (x2)

And you, you've gone too far this time
You have neither reason nor rhyme
With which to take this soul that is so rightfully mine
