book review: The Whole Thing: The Story of the Bible Through Six Images

Title: The Whole Thing: The Story of the Bible Through Six Images
Author: Jason English
Publisher: Jason English
Date: 2019

Jason English has written an excellent overview/summary/guide entitled The Whole Thing: The Story of the Bible Through Six Images. It is a quick read that offers a perspective on the story of the entire Bible, Genesis to Revelation, framed in terms of a single narrative.

In the opening, Jason writes, “I’m not trying to explain everything. I’m trying to explain the whole thing.” This is worth remembering as you read this book. I think he packs more into this easy read than many courses in Bible College.

The Whole Thing is an excellent starting point to either self-study or even better group discussion.

Sometimes we get lost in details, favourite verses and miss the whole story. Jason’s book reminds us of who we are and where we are headed. Jason puts scripture and historical context first and reminds us that “...the entire message of the Bible points to and through the face of Christ, in order for us to see God AND ourselves.”

The Whole Thing: The Story of the Bible Through Six Images is a simple and profound overview of the whole story of Scripture... simple for those who are interested in, seeking or new to the Christian faith and profound for anyone, even those who aren’t new to the faith.

Jason lays out the whole story of the Bible and the heart of the God who wrote it, which and who so often get misconstrued and misunderstood. With the focus on what God has created and intends to make whole from a heart of love and redemption rather than the brokenness of creation and the punitive nature of the Creator that has so often been portrayed, I can highly recommend this book.
