book review: Loving My Actual Neighbour

Title: Loving My Actual Neighbor: 7 Practices to Treasure the People Right in Front of You
Author: Alexandra Kuykendall
Publisher: Baker Books
Date: 2019

Community. Sometimes it is only a buzz word. Sometimes it is something to fight over who gets to belong.

In Loving My Actual Neighbor Kuykundell offers seven practices to help people learn how to embrace the community they naturally encounter in their everyday lives. She takes a straightforward approach to her topic. She offers one chapter on each of the seven practices followed by the appendices where she offers some further ideas.

There is nothing ground-breaking in this book. These are simple (in the best sense of the word) steps, but steps we often hesitate to take. 7 practices: humility, asking questions, quietness, being uncomfortable or awkward, accepting, lightening up, and, giving. Each chapter is followed by some questions for reflection and some practical ideas to put this into practice.

"Our neighbors - the people right in front o us - are not those we choose, but those we can choose to treasure." (p 21)
