There is a lot going on in our world at the moment...
There must be... I used a phrase from Taylor Swift's "22" music video
- Shortly after Musk left the government, he and Trump got into a catfight.
- Then Trump decided to invade Los Angeles, sending in the Marines to quell a rebellion that featured maybe 400 protestors armed with…. no, they weren’t armed.
- Trump warned, “IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT, and I promise you they will be hit harder than they have ever been hit before.”
- Was this a way of distracting attention from the Big, Beautiful Bill that seems to offer nothing beautiful to anybody but billionaires?
- Or is it preparing the way for a military takeover of the whole country?
- Israel attacked Iran, managing to kill much of the military chain of command. What comes next is unknown.
- A 240-passenger aeroplane crashed in India, killing all but one passenger as well as students in a school cafeteria the plane landed on.
- Israel continues to restrict or block aid vehicles from entering Gaza.
- Israel attacked Iran, and Iran, not unsurprisingly, retaliated.
- President Trump spoke sympathetically about the workers detained and deported by his anti-immigration crusade. His sympathy seemed largely aimed at hotel owners and construction bosses who rely on undocumented labour.
- Health Secretary Kennedy purged the vaccine advisory committee, replacing its members with members who are either anti-vax or sympathetic to anti-vax crusades.
- A U.S. Senator, Alex Padilla, was assaulted by security for DHS Secretary Kristi Noem after he interrupted her news conference, trying to ask a question. He was aggressively pushed into a corridor where he was forced to the floor and handcuffed.
- A judge declared illegal Trump’s commandeering of the California National Guard to protect ICE agents in Los Angeles. Another judge put this judgment on hold pending appeal.
- Masked ICE agents are disappearing people off the streets, out of businesses, and schools.
- While the US military made final preparations for a Trump-honouring parade through the District of Columbia, which will cost 25-40 million dollars, cities throughout America prepared “No Kings” protests opposed to Trump’s agenda.
A lot is happening in the world... a lot more than highlighted above.
I keep wondering about the meaning of our times. There are strange things going on.
- Why do people in one of the richest nations in history feel cheated and angry?
- What has caused people who sincerely believe themselves to be committed followers of Jesus to become advocates for the angry me-first mindset he warned so often against?
- What force has driven us into camps so antagonistic to each other that families and friends can’t even discuss their differences?
- What is it that so many love about Donald Trump?
- If the answers to these questions are somehow related, what is the central force at work?
