Psalm of Ascent: Psalm 126

Psalms 120 – 135 are a series of 15 Psalms sung by pilgrims either on their way to Jerusalem to celebrate one of the festivals or at the festivals themselves. Together they are called the "Psalms of Ascent".

Over the next several days, I want to explore some of the ways these ancient Psalms sung by pilgrims many years ago relate to us today.

These Psalms speak of hope, passion, future dreams, desire and trust while on a journey that reminds them, and us, of past memories, present sufferings and future promises.

The Psalms of Ascent point us to the hope that is present in the midst of whatever journey you are on.

Psalm 126 NLT
When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem,[Zion]
    it was like a dream!
2 We were filled with laughter,
    and we sang for joy.
And the other nations said,
“What amazing things the Lord has done for them.”
3 Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us!
    What joy!
4 Restore our fortunes, Lord,
    as streams renew the desert.
5 Those who plant in tears
will harvest with shouts of joy.
6 They weep as they go to plant their seed,
but they sing as they return with the harvest.

I have many books on many shelves on many subjects. And I read even more books from the library. One of the books that I am reading with grandkids right now is a book of dad jokes. Some are duds, some are groaners, but there are a few that tickle the funny bone.

There is something about laughter. There are some people who, no matter what the situation is, find a way to laugh. There are others who find it difficult to laugh hard and laugh often.

Psalm 126 is a reminder to laugh, celebrate and be joyful.
Psalm 126 gives us a clue how.

As the pilgrims entered Jerusalem, literally as they came up to Mount Zion, they knew the goodness of God. They would be telling the stories of how as an exiled people they had been allowed to come back to their home - to Jerusalem.

These Psalms of Ascent are a reminder that we have to stop and think of the goodness of God in my life – all the things that God has done for me. Remember his goodness, remember those "only God" moments. And yes, many times those "only God" moments arise out of pain and disappointment and tears. And as the psalmist declares:

Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.

They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.

Tears and joy can go together.

Today, think about this. Think about the things that have led to tears and then remember those places where you became aware that God was present.

Prayer
Lord, you have been good to me. As I think of the wonderful things that you have done in me and my family and my friends over the years, that my heart is filled with joy and thanksgiving. My thoughts are filled with your goodness towards me. I am so undeserving of your favour, yet I know that doesn’t enter your thoughts towards me. You are filled with love towards me and your grace flows freely and abundantly in my life. I am so thankful, Lord. Amen
