it was 40 years ago today

40 years ago today - 1 June 1967 - what many call the best rock and roll album of all time was released.

Why the greatest? Short answer: It was the most innovative. While not the Beatles' most original collection of songs, it was a unified package. The album had an overarching theme and distinct identity, musically and lyrically — with smooth segues between songs that reminded us that the whole was more important than the sum of its parts — a first in pop music. Some would say it created a new business model: the preeminence of the 33 1/3 RPM album.

We no longer have that model, the rise of iTunes has resulted in single songs being sold rather than a larger package.

I remember hanging out at friends places in Montreal & listening to the album over & over & over again.

Question:

You were in your early 20's when this was released?

Question:

Was your Montréal experience of this album "enhanced" in any way?
